ASTM A252-89
WELDE AND SEAMLESS STEEL PIPE PILES
This standard is issued under the fixed designation A 252; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision.
A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A superscript epsilon ( ε) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.
This specification has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.
Consult the DoD Index of Specifications and Standards for specific year of issue which has been adopted by the Department of Defense.
1.Scope
1.1 This specification covers nominal (average)wall steel pipe piles of cylindrical shape and applies to pipe in which the steel cylinder acts as a permanent load-carrying member, or as a shell to form cast-in place concrete piles.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard.
1.3 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 16 of this specification.
This standard does not purport to address all of the safery problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsi-bility of the user of this standard to establish applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Chemical composition
The steel shall conform to the following requirements as to chemical composition:
Phosphorus, max, %
Seamless and welded pipe:
Open-hearth, electric-furnace, or basic oxygen

8. Heat Analysis
8.1 An analysis of each heat shall be made by the manufacturer to determine the percentages of the elements specified. When requested by the purchaser, the chemical composition thus determimed shall be reported to the purchaser or his representative and shall conform to the requirements specified.
9. Product Analysis
9.1 Chemical analysis shall be in accordance with Test Methods, Practices, and Terminology A 751. 9.2 An analysis may be made by the purchaser onsample from lots of pipe piles as follows:
Pipe Size Outside
Diameter. in.
Number of Samples and Size of Lot
Under 14
2 from 200 pipe or fraction therrof
14 to 36. incl
2 from 100 pipe or fraction therrof
Over 36
2 from 300 pipe or fraction therrof
The chemical composition thus determined shall conform to the requirements specified in Section 7. 9.3 If the analysis of either pipe does not conform to the requirements specified in Section 7, analysis shall be made on additional pip of double the original number from the same lot, each of which shall conform to the requirements specified.

E = 40t + 12.50
3
E = 32t + 10.00
where: E = elongation in 2 in., %, and t = actual thickness of specimen, in.
