ASTM A53 Grade A VS B:

ASTM A53 (ASME SA53) carbon steel pipe is a specification that covers seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe in NPS 1/8" to NPS 26. A 53 is intended for pressure and mechanical applications and is also acceptable for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines.

A53 pipe comes in three types (F, E, S) and two grades (A, B).

A53 Type F is manufactured with a furnace butt weld or may have a continuous weld (Grade A only)

A53 Type E has an electric resistance weld (Grades A and B)

A53 Type S is a seamless pipe and found in Grades A and B)

A53 Grade B Seamless is our most polar product under this specification and A53 pipe is commonly dual certified to A106 B Seamless pipe.

ASTM A135:

This specification covers two grades of electric-resistance-welded steel pipe intended for conveying gas, vapor, water or other liquid. The steel shall be made by either or both basic-oxygen or electric-furnace processes. Steel may be cast in ingots or may be strand cast. The pipe shall be manufactured from flat rolled steel in individual lengths or continuous length by electric-resistance or electric-induction welding without the addition of extraneous material.

Scope :
Covers two grades of electric resistance welded steel pipe. Grade A is adapted for flanging and bending and is suitable for welding. Purpose for which pipe is intended should be stated on order.

Maximum Allowable Hardness A106:

Maximum allowable hardness A106/A516 . Is there any refrence or standard for the maximum allowable hardness for carbon steel welded carbon steel.and findin the hardness PIPE SO HARDNESS. We had a fire in a gas station and soem vessels were exposed for several hours to the fire. Have no idea what the temperature may have been but > 600 degrees C. Does anybody know what the maximum allowable hardness is for the CS A106 /A516. The inspector is using Brinell hardness meter. A106 don't have an imposed Brinell test value.
If you want an orientative value look at ASTM A234 - Piping Fittings of Wrought Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel for Moderate and High Temperature Service. For instance, grade A234 WPB is made from A106 grade B and have an imposed value of 197 HB maximum. (for my experince you can find 110-150 usually on new pipe A106 grade B).

Applications of A106 Pipe:

The medium-carbon cast steels represent the bulk of steel casting production, which is heattreated by normalizing. These castings are used in wide variety of ways, including application in the railroad and other transportation industries, machinery and tools, equipment for rolling mills, mining, and construction equipment and many other miscellaneous applications.

High carbon cast steels are used in applications that relatively high strength levels.

A106 pipe is intended for use in high temperature applications.
