ASTM Specification A252 describes nominal (average) wall steel pipe piles of cylindrical shape and applies to pipe piles in which the steel cylinder acts as a permanent load-carrying member or as a shell to form case-in-place concrete piles.

Surface imperfections exceeding 25% of the nominal wall in depth are considered defects. Defects not exceeding 22.5% of the nominal wall in depth may be repaired by welding. Before welding, the defect shall be completely removed.

- Mechanical Tests:
  - Tensile Test: Either longitudinal or transverse at option of manufacturer.
- Number of Tests: One tensile test per 200 lengths.

Permissible Variations for A252 steel piling pipe
- Wall thickness: Not more than 12.5% under the nominal wall thickness specified.
- Weights per foot: The weight of any individual length of pipe shall not vary more than 15% over or 5% under the weight specified. Each individual length shall be weighed separately.

A252 steel STANDARD SPECIFICATION	ASTM A-252-XX (XX= Represents year of last revision) FOUNDATION STEEL PIPE PILES
ASTM A252 SCOPE	This specification covers nominal thickness of the wall steel pipe piles of cylindrical shape and applies to pipe piles in which the steel cylinder acts as a permanent load-carrying member, or as a shell to form cast-in-place concrete piles.
STEEL FABRICATION PROCESS	The steel shall be made by one or more of the following processes : Martin/Bessemer furnace (open-hearth), basic-oxygen or electric furnace.

ASTM A252 PERMISSABLE VARIATIONS IN WEIGHTS AND DIMENSIONS	Weight The weight of any length of pile shall not vary more than 15% over or 5% under the nominal thickness weight. Each length shall be weighed separately. Thickness The minimum wall thickness at any point shall not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall thickness specified. Diameter The outside diameter of steel pipe piles shall not vary more than ±1% from the diameter specified. Length Length as specified with a tolerance of ±1².
ASTM A252 WORKMANSHIP, FINISH, AND APPEARANCE	The finished pipe piles shall be reasonably straight and shall not contain imperfections in such number or of such character as to render the pipe unsuitable for pipe piles. Surface imperfections, the depth of which does not exceed 25% of the nominal wall thickness, shall be permitted. These may be explored by grinding or filing to establish the depth. Surface imperfections, the depth of which exceeds 25% of the nominal wall thickness shall be considered defects. Repair of defects by welding will be permitted when the depth of defect does not exceed 33 ½ % of the nominal wall thickness. Before welding the defect shall be completely removed.
ASTM A252 PIPE ENDS	Unless otherwise specified, material shall be furnished with either flame or machine cut plain ends. When ends are specified to be beveled, they shall be beveled to an angle of 30°+5°- 0°. All burrs at the ends shall be removed.
NUMBER OF TESTS for ASTM A252	One tension test shall be made on one length or fraction thereof of each size, or one piece of skelp representing each lot of 200 lengths or fraction thereof of each size.

Manufacturer's name or mark, api5l, Spec 5L, gr.b pipe, size, weight per foot, grade, process of manufacture, type of steel, length (NPS 4 and larger only). Test pressure when hogher than tabulated (NPS 2 and larger only). Heat treat symbols, as applicable - HN, HS, HA or HQ.
