ASTM A376 ASME SA376	Seamless Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipe for High-Temp Central-Station Service.	Austenitic stainless steel pipe intended for high temperature and general corrosive service. Better surface than A312 pipe.

This specification covers seamless austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature central-station service. The grades covered are five H grades and two nitrogen grades. Pipe may be either hot finished or cold finished, with a suitable finishing treatment. All pipes shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition unless the order specifically states that no final heat treatment shall be applied. Tensile tests, hydrostatic test, nondestructive electric tests, ultrasonic tests, eddy-current tests, tension tests, and flattening tests shall be made to conform to the requirements specified.

Scope

1. This specification covers seamless austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature central-station service. Among the grades covered are H grades and nitrogen grades that are specifically intended for high-temperature service.

2. Optional supplementary requirements (S1 through S10) are provided.

3. Grades TP321 and TP321H have lower strength requirements for nominal wall thicknesses greater than 3/8 in. [9.5 mm].

4. The dimensionless designators NPS (nominal pipe size) and DN (Diametre Nominel) have been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size.”

309 Stainless Steel Pipe Introduction:

Type 309 is an austenitic chromium nickel stainless steel (.08% max carbon).Type 309is employed for parts requiring both corrosion and heat resistance and oxidation resistance up to 2000ºF. Strength at elevated temperatures is similar to that of 18-8 Stainless Steels. This alloy possess excellent resistance to oxidation as well as high tensile and creep strengths at elevated temperatures. It is more resistant to marine atmospheres than Type 304.It is generally considered as a heat-resisting alloy

309 Stainless Steel Pipe Typical Applications:

furnace parts, heating elements, aircraft and jet engine parts, heat exchangers, sulfite liquor handling equipment, kiln liners, boiler baffles, refinery and chemical processing equipment, and auto exhaust parts

Processing:

These alloys are not hardenable by heat treatment. Anneal at 1900 - 2050°F (1038 - 1121°C), then water quench or rapidly air cool.

Forming:

Types 309 and 309S Stainless Steels can be roll formed, stamped and drawn readily. In-process annealing is usually required to reduce hardness and increase ductility.

Welding:

Type 309 is generally considered to have weldability nearly equivalent to the most common alloys of this class, Types 304 and 304L. When a weld filler is needed, AWS E/ER 309 and 310 are most often specified.

Corrosion:

Types 309 and 309S provide excellent general corrosion resistance. They are more resistant to marine atmospheres than Type 304. They exhibit high resistance to sulfite liquors and are useful for handling nitric acid, nitric-sulfuric acid mixtures, and acetic, citric, and lactic acids.
