Standard Specification for Welded Large Diameter Austenitic Steel Pipe for Corrosive or High-Temperature Service.Austenitic Stainless Steel, Corrosive Service Applications, Fusion Welding, High-Temperature Service Applications, High-Temperature Services, Nickel-Chromium Steel, Steel Pipes, Tubular Products

ASTM A 409 (ASME SA-409 is generally identical with some additional requirements) This specification covers Schedule 5s and 10s straight-seam or spiral-seam welded stainless steel pipe intended for high temperature and general corrosive service. Production is normally limited to sizes of 14" through 30", however, special diameters, lengths and alloys can be specified. Pipe manufactured to A 409 may be heated after welding, made from annealed plate and not heat treated after welding, or made from unannealed plate and not heat treated after welding. The principal manufacturing procedures specified under A 409 are: 1. Either hydrostatic, air or gas pressure testing per lot. 2. Transverse guided-bend test and transverse tension test each length.

ASTM A 409/A 409M - 95a Welded Large Diameter Austenitic Steel Pipe for Corrosive or High-Temperature Service This specification covers straight seam or spiral seam electric-fusion-welded, light-wall, austenitic steel pipe intended for corrosive or high temperature service. Sizes covered are NPS 14 to NPS 30 with extra light (Schedule 5S) and light (Schedule 10S) wall thickness. Pipe having other dimensions may be specified.

Dimensions and Tolerances

• Dimensions. Pipe sizes normally furnished are NPS 14 to NPS 30 with extra light (Schedule 5S) and light (Schedule 10S) wall thickness.

• Minimum Wall Thickness. At any point this must not be more than 0.018 in (0.46 mm) under the specified wall thickness.

• Outside Diameter. For wall thicknesses <0.188 in (4.8 mm) OD tolerance is ±20%. For wall thicknesses >0.188 in (4.8 mm) OD tolerance is ±40%.

• Out-of-Roundness. The difference between maximum and minimum OD must be <1.5% of the specified OD. • Straightness. Deviation from 10 ft (3 m) straight edge is >< 3/16 in (4.8 mm).

• Cut Lengths. Unless otherwise specified, pipes NPS 22 are not less than 5 ft. Circumferential welding of two or more lengths may be specified.

302 Stainless Steel Manufacturing Process

302 Stainless steel requires slow speeds, and high feeds will aid in overcoming this alloy’s tendency to work harden. It is recommended that chip breakers are used on all tooling due to the occurrence of gummy chips. While welding grade 302, it is recommended that resistance or shielded fusion methods are used. The filler metals to be used are AWS E/ER308 or 312. Post weld annealing is performed when the chromium carbide needs to be dissolved so as to provide maximum resistance to inter-granular attack. Forging is ideally performed at these temperatures - 1149-1260°C (2100-2300°F). It is advisable not to forge below 927°C (1700°F). Forgings should be fully annealed after all operations so as to maintain full corrosion resistance.

Hot working requires uniform heating to 1149°C (2100°F) while cold working helps to increase the hardness of this material. Grade 302 is quite ductile and can be readily drawn, spun and upset. Cold working causes this alloy to gain magnetic properties, and hence post-fabrication annealing is required to recover maximum corrosion resistance and a non-magnetic condition. Annealing is performed between 1010 and 1121°C (1850 and 2050°F) with fast cooling so as to avoid precipitation of chromium carbides.

302 SS Applications
